Meaning in Education: Creating a Paradigm for the 21st Century

The words “meaning” and “meaningful” occur frequently in the writings of Black Mountain College faculty. That an educational experience should be “meaningful” suggests a dimension beyond the absorption of information and the accumulation of course hours and quality points as a measure of education. Is Black Mountain College an event to be relegated to the archives of American education or can its ideals provide guidance for educators preparing students for life in the increasingly secular, digital culture of the 21st Century? The lecture, rather than provide answers, will encourage a new thinking of the relevance of meaning in contemporary education.
