Art, Education, and Experimentation at Black Mountain College
Hilary Schroeder and Kristi McMillan
Underlying the creative legacy of Black Mountain College is a balance of taking risks while finding the structure necessary to produce an inspired and well rounded community of thinkers. In this workshop, we will discuss BMC through the lens of its artistic output and spirit of experimentation. Holding more than 900 works associated with BMC, the Asheville Art Museum’s Collection is rich with comparative studies and evidence of the lasting influence of BMC on both Western North Carolina and the progression of American art that followed its existence. Participants will have the opportunity to view primary documents that offer insight into BMC’s inner workings including course catalogues, promotional materials, graphic design, and an early edition of the Black Mountain Review.
