Retrospective of BMC artist Cy Twombly at Gagosian Gallery

A recent Cy Twombly retrospective, on display now at the famed Gagosian Gallery in NYC, celebrates the work of this great and prolific American postwar artist, whose Black Mountain College contemporaries were Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg.  The title of the show, In Beauty It Is Finished:  Drawings 1951-2008, is borrowed from a Native American night chant, and also provides the name of the sumptuous unbound book on view in the final room of the gallery.  In these drawings and several paintings, we can see Twombly’s obsession with the line at work, both as a fixture in nature, comprising the shapes of trees, birds and flowers, but also in the loopy, graffiti-like lines which create a visual signature symbolizing language itself.
